Kachana: Of gods and men
21/01/10 || Euthanatos
Everything about Kachana makes me really want to hate them. First of all, Kachana is a really stupid name. Sounds like some sort of herbal tea. Second of all, cliché doesn’t even begin to describe the band. Look at the title; “Of Gods and Men”. Oh, really? Listen to the band. Indiscernible heavy metal vocals, galloping Iron Maiden-esque riffs. Does the world really need another band like this?
Here’s the thing, though, Kachana are good at what they do. Nothing new, nothing groundbreaking, and that’s okay, at least as far as they’re concerned. These guys like traditional heavy metal, so they play traditional heavy metal. Is that a sin? Certainly debatable, but I don’t think I can judge them too harshly because of that.
You guys ever hear of Dream Evil? The band, not the album. Kachana reminds me of Dream Evil. It’s a totally unnecessary band, but it exists, and it actually has one good album, the first one, they play heavy metal, not speed, thrash, epic, black, ultra, techno, downsized, reprogrammed metal, just heavy metal, like Judas Priest used to do, or Iron Maiden, or Accept, simple metal, just metal, metal for the masses, metal lite, metal and that’s it. It’s not that heavy, it’s not that bright, but it’s still metal, it’s where we all come from, where we all started, and, hopefully, where it will all end.
It’s not a treat to listen to “Of Gods and Men”, it’s repetitive and there’s nothing really inspired here. But it’s not hideous either, every instrument is played accordingly, the singer, although bland, can certainly sing. As a matter of fact, you can listen to this entire album and it won’t really bother you, it can’t offend you, you’ll just walk away without having experienced anything special, your life won’t be changed. If you’re at the pub, this is playing in the background, do you get up and throw your pitcher at the bartender? Nay, you’ll just tap your fingers on the table and continue talking about how awesome it was that Italian PM Berlusconi got whacked in the face with an alabaster statuette, breaking a few teeth, nose and getting bloodied to shit.
So, yeah, the world certainly doesn’t need Kachana, but maybe Kachana need their place in the world, a humble place, a simple place, where we can all sit together, join hands and sing Kumbaya.
